Steve started playing guitar in the mid 70's after hearing such greats as Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore. Allen Collins & Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd were also two of his favorites along with Frank Marino of
Mahogany Rush. He would spend hours in his bedroom trying to find the notes of his favorite songs and finally in 1978 started his first band with a few of his school buddies. They entered a talent show shortly afterwards and by every
band members surprise--won! The band went on to play on a local telethon but as with most teenage bands broke up soon afterwards. Steve went on to play with other area bands and played in the West Tennessee area off and on for years. His most notable shows were when the band Blind Justice of which he was lead guitarist, played in front of
Molly Hatchet & Black Oak Arkansas. The
other show was when the band, Rodeo Drive, played in front of Survivor. Although those were good memories, he says the band Primal Heart is the greatest thing that he has done musically. He and the lead vocalist for Rodeo Drive, Robby Owens got together and started writing. After awhile it was evident that a live show had to be done. By pulling in seasoned musicians from the area, Primal Heart was complete! With the mix of original and classic rock, he is able to express himself with his guitar and prides himself in learning cover material as close to note for note as he possibly can, something that he says many guitarist sometimes don't want to do. As for now, he awaits the release of the next CD and hopes West Tenn will continue to love the music of Primal Heart.
